Elastuff - Marin County Civic Center

Marin County Civic Center
San Rafael, California
This unique building was the final commission accepted by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957, prior to his death. Since it is listed in the State and Federal Historic Registries, there could be no changes that would alter the original design. At least three different roof coating systems had been applied over the years, yet the roof leaked profusely. UNITED'S Elastuff 101/102 System was specified because of its ability to adhere to the existing coatings, as well as to the original concrete deck substrate. After pressure washing, an extensive amount of detail work was required on the 3.6 miles of ornamental concrete ridge bars and 680 circular and scallop-shaped details. There were also 509 trellis openings and 570 scupper spouts, many of which were severely spalled. One coat of Elastuff 101, followed by two coats of Elastuff 102, were applied to provide the desired finished result–recapturing the original, dramatic Frank Lloyd Wright design.
